Astonishing Autumn in Canterbury

Belfast Road Self Storage • March 3, 2020

As we roll on into Autumn its time to start enjoying everything that Canterbury & New Zealand have to offer.

Autumn in New Zealand is a truely wonderful time.  The days are getting shorter and cooler but the colours of the trees are vivid reds and greens.  The South Island, with its magnificent mountain backdrop, has something even more exciting and inspiring to offer.
Autumn is the perfect time to set out and explore Christchurch and Canterbury before the winter really sets in.

Christchurch City itself is full of places to go and get lost in.  Head to Hagley Park and enjoy the rich reds of the autumn foliage that frame glimpses of the Avon River as it curls through the park. Find a quiet sunny spot to sit and read a book while the leaves cascade from the trees or take a walk around the Botanical Gardens.

If the beach is more appealing then Christchurch also has some amazing options.  From the tiny coves and inlets of Lyttleton Harbour to the long sweep of Pegasus Bay, on autumn days the beaches are a great place to go to escape the city.
If you are a part of the growing club of classic car enthusiasts in New Zealand then Autumn could also be the last opportunity to take your car out for a spin before storing it away safely for the winter months.

Take a drive out to Akaroa Harbour and explore the charming French village and the small towns and stunning views on the way.  There are some great places to eat and coffee lovers will find some very good cafes in the village. At this time of the year Akaroa’s autumn foliage makes a stunning show against the dark greens backdrop of the hills.
Or head up to the the thermal resort of Hanmer, just over an hour north-west of Christchurch which is beautiful in its autumn colours.   Although only a small town, Hanmer has so much to offer and after escaping the city its nice to unwind in one of the many naturally-heated hot pools, or have a massage or a beauty treatment before dining at one of Hanmer’s many fine restaurants.

Summer is the time for beaches and BBQs and winter brings its own set of stunning mountain views, winter sports and activities that will have you dusting off your skis and snow gear but until then don't miss out on the astonishing autumn.

No matter what time of year it is and and whatever your planning make sure you bring a camera and buddy to take advantage of the stunning New Zealand scenery.
