March 12, 2020

You may be decluttering the house, heading off on an adventure or just don't have space for your stamp collection.  Whatever the reason, long term self storage is a great solution.

There are many situations that call for long term storage solutions.  You may need to only store one thing like a classic car or boat that you don't have use for or has sentimental value.  Or maybe you want to pack up that collection of rare comic books that you have been building up since you were a kid.  Some of our past customers have been lucky enough to secure their dream job overseas and need somewhere to keep their belongings for a couple of years.

We understand that knowing what to do with your things wile you're away or don't have the space for them can be incredibly stressful.  Worrying about your belongings in long term storage is the last thing that you need!  There are many benefits to renting storage space to secure your items for an extended length of time and if you are looking for safe and secure storage units in Christchurch then we can defiantly help.

So before you go throwing everything into your new unit and closing the door on it, we have some top tips to help you get the best storage service to keep your items safe and secure.

How much space do you need? Be Realistic!

Ask your self how much stuff do you need to store and think about what size unit you will need to rent to accommodate it.  Are you just looking to store a car or small amount of items or would you prefer to store all your belongings to eliminate having to pay rent on your house while you are away?  You can save yourself a lot of money on your storage simply by renting the right size unit.

Clean everything properly.

It may seem silly to clean something before you pack it away in a box for a long time, but this is an important step.

Making sure that items are well cleaned and completely dry before packing will prevent any nasty bugs and insects, issues with mould and damp or rotting from happening.

So, clean all your appliances, clothes, cars, utensils, shoes, furniture and everything else, completely drying them prior to storage to avoid any nasty surprises when you unpack those boxes a couple of years down the line.

Get quality storage boxes and packing

After you have cleaned everything and are ready to pack it up you should think about the best way to keep everything secure for a long period of time.  Taking a little extra time and effort to pack cannot be emphasised enough.

We recommend using plastic storage boxes with sealable lids.  This is a great way to create an air tight seal for your belongings for the entire time they are in storage.  Plastic boxes also last for a lot longer and are much more durable than regular cardboard boxes.  In case of an eventuality, plastic is much better at protecting your items from harsh weather elements. If you are storing big items such as furniture, cover them with plastic covers to keep dust away.

Make sure that any breakable items are well wrapped up to keep them secure and safe.  When comes to packing and stacking your storage unit make sure that boxes are stacked properly and if possible try to keep items such as furniture off the floor.

Check in every now and then

We recommend that you try to check in on your storage unit regularly.  If you are heading overseas and cant do this yourself you could have a friend or family member do this for you.   Although most storage companies will have security measures in place such as CCTV and alarms, checking up on your unit every now and then ensures that if there are any problems they will be addressed  quickly.  If you are renting Christchurch storage this can be especially helpful in the event that items have shifted or fallen over.  Your appointed person would also be able to ship an item to you from your storage unit if you decide you need it while you’re away.

If you are storing valuable items such as a hobby car, you may want to check it regularly to put your mind at ease that your investment is safe.  Sometimes, pests and rodents attack storage units. Therefore, regular pest control is necessary.

Automate your rent

When it comes to paying your self-storage bill while you’re away from home, you can set it up on auto-debit, or you can use your bank’s bill payment feature and pay it online.
This way you can enjoy yourself and have one less thing you need to think about. This tip goes for other bills you might have too while you’re away, like cable or Netflix.
